10 adaptive clothing hacks that work for me as a blind person

A chic, blind Black woman walking confidently down a city sidewalk while navigating with a long white cane. She is elegantly dressed in a black turtleneck jumpsuit with a gold logo belt, a long cream-colored trench coat, large dark sunglasses, and gold jewelry, while carrying a black quilted handbag.

I don’t think of these as solutions. They’re just small systems I’ve built over time to make getting dressed easier, faster and more consistent.

  1. Keeping the closet exactly the same

Everything has a place, and it stays there. Once something is learned, there’s no need to rethink it every day.

  1. Marking clothes in simple, consistent ways

A small stitch, a safety pin, or the placement of a tag can signal colour or item type. The system doesn’t need to be complex, just reliable.

  1. Grouping outfits ahead of time

When a combination works, those pieces stay together. It removes guesswork and saves time.

  1. Using a phone as a second set of eyes

Apps like Seeing AI or Be My Eyes can help double-check colours or read labels when needed.

  1. Relying on texture

Denim, cotton, knits . . . fabric feel often provides more reliable information than anything visual.

  1. Having a few trusted outfits

Certain combinations work every time. On busy days, reaching for those makes everything simpler.

  1. Organizing by category

Tops in one section, pants in another. Clear structure reduces the chance of grabbing the wrong item.

  1. Keeping things paired

Outfits, socks, and even accessories stay together whenever possible to avoid searching later.

  1. Adding small cues for front and back

A tiny detail, like a stitch near the back collar, can make dressing quicker and more intuitive.

  1. Adapting the system over time

What works at home may not work while travelling or sharing space. Adjustments happen as routines change.

Takeaway . . . There’s no single way to do this. These are simply strategies that have proven useful. Adapt what fits, ignore what doesn’t.
